What is Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology and Hepatology are very broad medical specialties encompassing multiple different parts of the body and focus on all the organs that are primarily involved in the digestion and absorption of food, in addition to the removal of waste from the body.
The specialty covers all symptoms and conditions that affect the gullet (oesophagus), stomach, small bowel, large bowel (colon), liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas which are all in your tummy (abdomen).
An intricate understanding of how these organs normally work and how they are affected by disease is essential. They are all closely connected, so a problem with one area can cause another to not function properly. This will cause your symptoms depending on which area happens to be involved.
The different organs can be tested by looking at blood samples, stool samples, scans and performing endoscopy camera tests to examine them from the inside. There are sometimes other tests that are required depending on your symptoms or condition.
Dr Baker is a specialist in this field and therefore known as a Consultant Gastroenterologist. He recognises that many will find their troublesome symptoms alarming, and at times embarrassing, and appreciates the significant effect they can have on an individuals day to day quality of life.
